A garment unit doing ₹7 crore a year used to be "too big" for the micro tag. On 1 April 2025, it quietly became micro again.

That's what the revised MSME limits did. So if you dropped Udyam registration because your numbers looked too large, rethink that.

Who Qualifies for Udyam Registration Under the New MSME Limits?

Manufacturers and service firms qualify if investment stays under ₹125 crore and turnover under ₹500 crore. You register on the official Udyam portal using Aadhaar and PAN. It costs nothing, and you don't upload a single document.

The Revised MSME Limits at a Glance

The Budget promised 2.5 times higher investment caps and double the turnover caps. That's exactly what happened. All India Radio News carried the final figures:

CategoryInvestment (up to)Turnover (up to)
Micro₹2.5 crore₹10 crore
Small₹25 crore₹100 crore
Medium₹125 crore₹500 crore

Under the old rules, micro meant ₹1 crore of investment and ₹5 crore of sales at most. Medium firms couldn't go past ₹50 crore invested. That's quite a jump.

Udyam Registration Eligibility Criteria for MSMEs

People tend to overthink the Udyam Registration Eligibility Criteria for MSMEs. It's two numbers: what you've put into plant, machinery or equipment, and what you sold that year. Stay under both limits for a category and you're in it. Cross either one and you move up.

Export sales are left out of the turnover figure, which helps exporters. Shops and wholesalers can register too, mainly for priority sector lending.

Business type barely matters. Sole owners, partnerships, LLPs, private companies and trusts can all apply.

With these looser eligibility criteria, many firms that were "small" now land in micro.

Udyam Registration Process Online: Step by Step

The Udyam Registration Process Online happens on one site only: udyamregistration.gov.in.

  1. Put in the Aadhaar number of the owner, managing partner or authorised signatory.
  2. Type the OTP that comes to the linked phone.
  3. Enter your PAN. The portal then reads your investment and turnover from tax records.
  4. Fill in your address, what the business does and your bank details.
  5. Submit, and you'll get a Udyam Registration Number.

The certificate is downloadable straight after. It has a QR code that a bank or buyer can scan to check it.

Is Registering on the Udyam Portal Really Free?

Yes, completely. The Press Information Bureau said in July 2026 that Udyam registration is free and paperless.

In the same release, the government put total sign-ups on the Udyam portal and the Udyam Assist Platform at over 8.9 crore enterprises. Between them, they employ more than 38 crore people.

Be careful with lookalike websites. Some charge a "registration fee" for the basic form. You don't owe anyone that.

Already Registered? Here's What Happens Now

You keep your existing number. The portal checks your ITR and GST filings and shifts your category on its own.

Do log in once in a while, though, and see that the details match your books. The Udyam Registration Process Online lets you edit things whenever the business changes.

Grow Bigger Without Losing Your MSME Benefits

These limits give you more room to grow before you lose MSME support. If Udyam registration has been sitting on your to-do list, this is a good month to tick it off.

The form is free, yes. But a wrong activity code or a mismatched PAN can delay loans and tender benefits. Juriven LLP can check where you stand and help you finish your Udyam registration without errors. Drop us a message and we'll take it from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the new MSME limits from 2025?

Since 1 April 2025, micro firms can have up to ₹2.5 crore invested and ₹10 crore in turnover. Small firms can go to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore. For medium firms, the caps sit at ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.

2. Is Udyam registration mandatory?

Not by law for every business. Still, without Udyam registration you can't claim most MSME perks, like priority sector loans, tender relaxations or protection against late payments under the MSMED Act. For a growing firm, skipping it rarely makes sense.

3. What documents do I need for Udyam?

Only Aadhaar and PAN, plus GSTIN if GST law covers your business. Keep the Aadhaar-linked phone nearby for the OTP. During the Udyam Registration Process Online, the portal pulls your figures from tax records, so there's nothing to upload.

4. Do I need to re-register after the limit change?

No, your existing registration simply carries on as it is. The portal reads your ITR and GST data and updates your category by itself. It's still worth logging in now and then to check everything matches your latest tax filings.

5. Can traders register under Udyam?

They can. Retailers and wholesalers register on the same portal, mostly to get priority sector loans from banks. Under the Udyam Registration Eligibility Criteria for MSMEs, a trader faces the same investment and turnover caps as any other firm.
